A 74-year-old man has died from Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever at La Paz Hospital in Madrid after being bitten by a tick in Buenasbodas, Toledo.
He was admitted to the hospital on July 19 with fever and general malaise, and his condition was confirmed as Crimean-Congo fever shortly after.
The disease, caused by a virus transmitted primarily through tick bites, can lead to severe hemorrhagic symptoms and has a mortality rate of 10-15%.
Health authorities are monitoring those who had contact with the patient to prevent further transmission.
This case highlights the growing concern over tick-borne diseases in Spain, particularly as warmer temperatures and wildlife populations increase the risk of tick encounters.
To prevent tick bites, health officials recommend wearing appropriate clothing and using repellents during outdoor activities.
