Adif President Dismissed Amid Rail Chaos

Published: 2024-09-13

In a significant shake-up, Spain's Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has dismissed Ángel Contreras as president of Adif, the state-owned railway infrastructure manager.

This decision comes amidst ongoing disruptions in the country's rail services, with frequent delays and cancellations affecting major stations like Madrid's Atocha and Barcelona's Sants.

The government cites a need for restructuring within Adif, denying any connection to the 'Koldo case,' a corruption investigation involving high-level officials.

Contreras, who had been in the role for just nine months, was initially appointed by Puente himself.

The move has sparked concerns within Adif, with some viewing it as a politically motivated decision rather than one based on operational needs.

A new president is expected to be appointed soon to steer the company through its current challenges.
