The Catalan police, Mossos d'Esquadra, have admitted to significant errors in their attempt to arrest former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont on August 8th, during the investiture of Salvador Illa as President of the Generalitat.
An internal report submitted to Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena highlights technical and strategic failures in the operation, which was intended to enforce an existing arrest warrant for Puigdemont, who has been in self-imposed exile in Belgium since 2017. The report reveals that the police underestimated the possibility of Puigdemont's escape, focusing instead on securing the investiture event.
Despite deploying over 600 officers, drones, and a helicopter, the operation was thwarted by a diversion orchestrated by Puigdemont's supporters, allowing him to evade capture.
The Mossos' report also notes a lack of cooperation from the Catalan Parliament, which delayed police access to its premises, further complicating the arrest attempt.
