Catalonia's Independence Movement Faces Decline

Published: 2024-09-12

Catalonia's independence movement is experiencing a significant decline, as evidenced by the recent Diada celebrations.

For the first time in over a decade, the event took place without an independentist president in the Generalitat, and only 73,800 people participated in the demonstrations across Catalonia.

This is a stark contrast to previous years when the movement could gather over a million supporters.

The political landscape is marked by deep divisions between major separatist parties, Junts per Catalunya and Esquerra Republicana, both undergoing internal struggles and leadership changes.

The presence of the far-right secessionist party, Aliança Catalana, has further complicated the scene, leading to disagreements over the inclusivity of the independence movement.

Despite these challenges, leaders like Lluís Llach of the ANC continue to call for unity and resilience, though the movement's future remains uncertain.
