Catalonia's Unique Fiscal Deal Sparks Debate

Published: 2024-09-05

Spain's Vice President María Jesús Montero defended a unique fiscal agreement for Catalonia in the Senate, accusing the opposition PP of "fiscal populism" and lacking a reform proposal.

The deal, between PSC and ERC, allows Catalonia to collect its taxes and pay a solidarity quota to the state, similar to the Basque and Navarrese systems.

Critics argue it could create inequality among regions.

Montero insists the agreement is constitutional and promotes federalism, while the PP demands transparency and accuses the government of "independentist financing.

" The debate highlights ongoing tensions over regional autonomy and fiscal policy in Spain.
