The recent investigation by the Guardia Civil has unveiled a complex web of political and business interactions surrounding the controversial visit of Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to Spain in January 2020. The report highlights that José Luis Ábalos, the then Minister of Transport, misled Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez about the true purpose of Rodríguez's visit.
Despite an EU ban on her entry, Rodríguez's trip was orchestrated by Víctor Aldama, a key figure in a corruption network, who arranged meetings with Spanish businessmen and Ábalos himself.
The Guardia Civil's findings suggest that Aldama used his connections to facilitate the visit, which included sensitive discussions about Venezuelan gold transactions.
Although the Spanish government claims the visit was unauthorized, the investigation indicates that Ábalos informed Sánchez, who seemingly approved the meeting.
This revelation has sparked political controversy, although the Supreme Court previously dismissed the case, ruling that breaching EU agreements is not a criminal offense.
