The Spanish government's proposal to use Ciudad Real Airport as a temporary migrant center has sparked significant controversy.
The Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Cerro Chaves, expressed support for initiatives aiding migrants, but the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, led by Emiliano García-Page, strongly opposes the plan.
They argue that the airport, which hasn't seen commercial flights since 2011, is legally restricted to industrial and tertiary activities, making the proposed use illegal.
Critics, including local officials, fear the site could become a "social ghetto" or "concentration camp" for migrants.
Despite these concerns, the central government insists the plan is still under evaluation, aiming to alleviate migration pressures on Spanish coasts.
The debate highlights tensions between regional and national authorities over immigration policies.
