DANA Storm Hits Balearic Islands Hard

Published: 2024-08-15

A severe weather phenomenon known as DANA has been causing significant disruptions across the Balearic Islands, particularly in Mallorca, where the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a red alert.

The storm has brought torrential rains, with forecasts predicting up to 180 liters per square meter in just a few hours, accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 100 km/h.

This has led to widespread flight cancellations and delays at Palma's airport, affecting over 40 flights.

In Formentera, the storm has resulted in nine injuries, two of which are serious, due to a sailing accident.

The adverse weather is expected to continue, with the potential for further disruptions and damage across the region.
