Electricity bills in 2025 are set to rise significantly due to the return of VAT on electricity to 21% and a 33% increase in regulated charges.
For households on the free market, this means an average annual increase of €121, or about €10.14 more per month.
Those on regulated tariffs could see an even steeper rise of €140 annually, or €12 monthly.
The wholesale electricity price, which has hovered around €100 per MWh, and higher gas prices are also contributing to the surge.
Experts urge consumers to compare tariffs and adopt energy-saving habits to mitigate costs.
Despite these increases, the government estimates that electricity bills in 2025 will still be lower than the inflation-adjusted levels of 2019.
