EU Court Invalidates Morocco Trade Deals

Published: 2024-10-05

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has invalidated the EU's fishing and trade agreements with Morocco, citing the lack of consent from the Sahrawi people.

This decision supports the Polisario Front's stance and marks a significant setback for Morocco, which has been seeking international recognition of its sovereignty over Western Sahara.

The court ruled that the agreements violated the principle of self-determination, as they included products from Western Sahara without the consent of its people.

Morocco has responded by urging the EU to respect bilateral commitments, while the Polisario Front views the ruling as a victory for their resistance.

The EU is now tasked with reassessing its agreements with Morocco, ensuring they align with international law and the rights of the Sahrawi people.
