EU Raises Concerns Over Spain's Judiciary

Published: 2024-07-24

The European Commission has expressed concerns regarding Spain's adherence to the rule of law, particularly highlighting the controversial amnesty law and the pressure exerted by politicians on the judiciary.

In its latest report, the Commission noted that while Spain has made significant progress in renewing the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), it criticized the urgent procedure used to pass the amnesty law, which limited public consultation.

The report also pointed out the lack of independence in the appointment of the Attorney General, urging Spain to separate the mandates of the Attorney General and the government.

Furthermore, the Commission is still investigating the amnesty law's compatibility with EU law, indicating that this could lead to infringement proceedings against Spain.

Overall, the report reflects a mixed assessment of Spain's judicial reforms and the ongoing challenges in maintaining judicial independence.
