Fierce Winds Fuel Granada Wildfire

Published: 2024-08-14

A fierce forest fire has erupted in the mountainous region of Peña Escrita, Almuñécar, Granada, prompting a significant emergency response.

The blaze, which began on Tuesday evening, has been exacerbated by strong winds with gusts reaching 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, leading to secondary fire outbreaks.

Over 160 ground personnel, supported by aerial units including a cargo plane and a semi-heavy helicopter, are battling the flames.

The challenging terrain and scattered residential areas have complicated firefighting efforts.

Despite the difficult conditions, no fatalities have been reported, although a 57-year-old woman was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.

The Infoca team, responsible for forest fire management in Andalusia, is working tirelessly to stabilize the fire, focusing on preventing its spread southward.

The situation remains critical as weather conditions continue to hinder containment efforts.
