The Spanish government has announced a plan to redesign the Valley of Cuelgamuros, formerly known as the Valley of the Fallen, as part of its democratic memory law.
Despite earlier promises to remove the Benedictine community from the site, the monks will remain following an agreement with the Vatican.
In exchange, the government will launch an international competition to transform the monument into a center for historical interpretation.
The project, with a budget of €30.5 million, aims to address the site's controversial history, including its construction using forced labor during Franco's dictatorship.
The redesign will include a museum to reflect on the monument's political and religious symbolism.
However, critics argue that the government has compromised its initial goals, raising questions about its ability to fully implement the resignification process.
