Illa's New Catalan Government Signals Change

Published: 2024-08-12

Salvador Illa, the new President of Catalonia, has formed a government with 16 ministers, marking a significant political shift in the region.

This new administration, which includes a mix of PSC loyalists, former members of Junts, and independent figures, aims to signal the end of the 'procés' and promote stability.

Notably, Illa has appointed Jaume Duch, former spokesperson of the European Parliament, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Miquel Sàmper, a former Junts member, as the Minister of Business and Labor.

The government also includes a new Department of Linguistic Policy, a move to protect the Catalan language, which was a condition set by ERC for their support.

Illa's cabinet, which has a majority of women, reflects a broad political spectrum and aims to foster dialogue and consensus within a "plurinational Spain.

" The new government is seen as a step towards normalizing relations and focusing on governance rather than separatist agendas.
