Immigration Fuels Spain's Workforce Growth

Published: 2024-09-20

Immigration has become a crucial component of Spain's labor market, accounting for 90% of the workforce growth since 2021. This influx of foreign workers is not only filling low-wage jobs but also ensuring generational continuity in various professions and supporting the public pension system.

Despite public concerns, recent studies, including one by the Fundación de Estudios de Economía Aplicada (Fedea), highlight the positive impact of immigrants, who now make up a significant portion of the labor force in 15 key sectors.

These sectors include domestic work, hospitality, and cleaning services, where immigrants represent a substantial share of the workforce.

The study also notes a decrease in occupational segregation compared to the pre-recession era, with immigrants participating across a broader range of jobs.

Experts argue that without this migrant workforce, many social and economic needs would remain unmet, challenging the negative perceptions often portrayed in media narratives.
