Junts Accuses Illa of Nepotism and Absence

Published: 2024-08-19

Junts, the Catalan political party, has launched a strong critique against the new government led by Salvador Illa, accusing it of nepotism and being overly influenced by Spanish centralism.

The controversy centers around the appointments of Alfons Jiménez, partner of the spokesperson Sílvia Paneque, and Yolanda Collboni, sister of Barcelona's mayor, to significant government positions.

Junts has demanded Illa's appearance in the Catalan Parliament to explain these appointments, which they label as clear cases of nepotism.

Additionally, they criticize Illa for missing the commemoration of the 17-A terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, choosing instead to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Lanzarote.

This absence has been interpreted by Junts as Illa receiving instructions from Sánchez, further fueling their claims of his government being a mere extension of Spanish authority.

The opposition, including the PP, has echoed these sentiments, calling for an audit to address what they see as unnecessary government spending and favoritism.
