Junts Blocks Rental Law, Sparks Controversy

Published: 2024-09-17

In a surprising turn of events, the Catalan party Junts has blocked a proposed law aimed at regulating temporary and room rentals in Spain, causing a significant setback for the coalition government led by Pedro Sánchez.

Initially, Junts had indicated they would abstain from the vote, which would have allowed the law to proceed.

However, they ultimately voted against it, aligning with opposition parties and resulting in a narrow defeat of 178 votes against to 172 in favor.

The proposed legislation, supported by the PSOE and other coalition partners, sought to address fraudulent practices in temporary rentals.

Junts' decision has drawn criticism from tenant associations, who accuse the party of betraying renters and exacerbating housing issues.

This move highlights the fragile nature of the current government coalition, as Junts continues to wield significant influence over legislative outcomes.
