Junts Challenges Spanish Government on Amnesty

Published: 2024-08-13

Junts per Catalunya has intensified its criticism of the Spanish government, accusing it of cowardice for not fully applying the amnesty law to Carles Puigdemont, the former Catalan president.

Eduardo Pujol, Junts' spokesperson in the Senate, likened Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena to a "Tejero without a mustache," referencing the infamous coup leader, and accused the government of failing to confront judicial overreach.

Junts is also reconsidering its agreement with the PSOE, following a new pact between the socialists and Esquerra Republicana, which they believe undermines their previous negotiations.

The party demands that the government take legal action against judges who refuse to apply the amnesty law.

This political tension comes as Junts' support remains crucial for the stability of Pedro Sánchez's government, especially with upcoming budget negotiations.
