Madrid is set to begin major construction on the A-5 highway starting January 15, aiming to transform the area into the Paseo Verde del Suroeste.
The project will reduce the highway to two lanes per direction for two years, prompting the city and the Ministry of Transport to implement alternative mobility plans.
Measures include making the R-5 toll road free for buses, adding a dedicated bus lane on the A-5, and increasing train frequency on the C-5 line by up to 40%, with 40,000 additional seats.
Enhanced customer service and security measures will also be introduced at key stations.
The project, delayed from December to avoid holiday disruptions, has sparked debates over traffic management and accessibility.
Officials emphasize the long-term benefits for residents and visitors despite short-term inconveniences.
