Madrid residents will face a new waste management tax starting next year, averaging 140 euros annually.
This tax, mandated by the central government to comply with a European directive, will be applied in all Spanish municipalities with over 5,000 inhabitants.
In response, Madrid's Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida announced a reduction in the Property Tax (IBI) to offset the new expense, covering 86% of the additional cost for residents.
The tax is based on property value and waste generation, with concerns it may increase rental prices as landlords pass the cost to tenants.
Despite criticism of the central government's fiscal policies, the local government emphasizes efforts to minimize the tax's impact.
