A significant forest fire has erupted in the Sierra de Andújar, near the Encinarejo reservoir in Jaén, Spain, affecting over 700 hectares and prompting the evacuation of 400 to 500 residents from scattered homes in the area.
The Andalusian government has declared an emergency phase due to the threat to people and property, with around 60 evacuees being temporarily housed in nearby hotels.
The fire, which began on Sunday afternoon, has a perimeter exceeding 20 kilometers and is being battled by a large contingent of over 150 ground personnel and 16 aerial units, including helicopters and amphibious planes.
Efforts are concentrated on the fire's head and southern sector to protect residential areas, particularly around La Lancha.
Despite challenging conditions, including low humidity and variable winds, the proximity of the reservoir aids aerial firefighting efforts.
Authorities urge the public to avoid the area to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure safety.
