Portugal's Wildfire Crisis: International Aid Mobilized

Published: 2024-09-18

Portugal is grappling with devastating wildfires that have claimed lives and caused widespread destruction.

The Portuguese government has declared affected areas as disaster zones to expedite aid and resources.

Over 71,000 hectares have burned, with seven fatalities, including four firefighters.

Spain has sent 230 soldiers to assist, while the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism has bolstered aerial support with aircraft from Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

Despite improved weather conditions, 57 fires remain active.

The situation is reminiscent of the catastrophic 2017 fires, prompting stern warnings from Portuguese officials against arson.

Meanwhile, a bus carrying Spanish passengers narrowly escaped the flames, highlighting the fires' reach and impact.
