PSOE Faces Internal Crisis Over Catalonia Deal

Published: 2024-08-03

The political landscape in Spain is shaking as the PSOE faces internal dissent over a controversial agreement between the PSC and ERC that could allow Catalonia to manage its own tax revenues.

Leaders from various regions, including Emiliano García-Page of Castilla-La Mancha and Javier Lambán of Aragón, have openly criticized the deal, calling it a "grave attack on equality" and warning it could lead to less funding for other regions.

The agreement, which is pending ratification by ERC's members, has sparked calls for a federal council meeting to discuss the implications for regional financing.

Many PSOE members fear that this could create a fiscal divide, undermining the principle of solidarity among Spain's autonomous communities.

As tensions rise, the party's unity is at stake, with some leaders demanding a more transparent dialogue about the future of regional financing.
