PSOE Faces Leadership Challenges in Andalusia

Published: 2024-12-02

The Andalusian branch of Spain's Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is gearing up for its 15th regional congress, set for February in Armilla, Granada.

The congress could see a fierce primary battle or a consensus candidate emerge, as current leader Juan Espadas faces internal criticism.

Espadas, who has been at the helm since the party lost significant power in 2018, is challenged by calls for generational change, with Juanfra Serrano being a potential contender.

Meanwhile, the national PSOE leadership, under Pedro Sánchez, has not indicated support for any specific candidate, leaving the decision to Andalusian members.

The situation mirrors broader challenges within the PSOE, as the party seeks to regain influence in key regions like Andalusia and Madrid, where the opposition has gained ground.
