Sánchez Ordered to Testify in Corruption Case

Published: 2024-07-26

Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Spanish Government, has been ordered to testify in person regarding the investigation into his wife, Begoña Gómez, who is accused of influence peddling and corruption.

The Madrid court, led by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, rejected Sánchez's request to provide a written statement, asserting that his knowledge of the case stems from his role as Gómez's husband, not as President.

The court emphasized that the law allows for written testimony only when the facts are known due to the official capacity.

Sánchez's testimony is scheduled for July 30 at the Moncloa Palace, and he has the right to refuse to answer questions, as spouses of the accused are exempt from mandatory testimony.

The judge's decision has sparked discussions about the legal implications and the nature of Sánchez's involvement in the case.
