Severe Weather Hits Spain: Alerts Issued

Published: 2024-08-14

A significant cold air mass is sweeping across Spain, bringing with it severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a notable drop in temperatures.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange and red alerts for regions such as Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and parts of the eastern peninsula, warning of intense rainfall and potential hailstorms.

In Catalonia, areas like Girona and Lleida are experiencing torrential rains, with reports of hailstones up to 3 centimeters in diameter.

The situation is expected to worsen, with the most severe weather anticipated on Wednesday, as a cold front evolves into a high-altitude depression (DANA) over the Mediterranean.

This atmospheric instability is likely to cause widespread disruption, with risks of flooding and strong winds.

Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the weather system progresses.
