Seville Targets Illegal Tourist Rentals

Published: 2024-08-14

The Seville City Council, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía, is taking decisive action against approximately 5,000 illegal tourist apartments operating without proper licenses.

The plan includes cutting off water supplies to these properties, a measure aimed at curbing the rapid growth of unregulated vacation rentals that have been causing significant disruption in neighborhoods like the Historic Center and Triana.

Despite the ambitious goal, the current inspection rate of 10 properties per week suggests it could take a decade to address all violations unless more inspectors are hired.

Critics argue that the measure is insufficient and call for a moratorium on new tourist rental licenses to effectively tackle the issue.

The initiative also involves increased inspections and collaboration with the Tourist Police to ensure compliance and address community concerns.
