Spain and Morocco are finalizing the reopening of customs at Ceuta and Melilla after nearly three years of negotiations.
This marks a significant shift, as Ceuta will have its first-ever customs post, while Melilla’s will reopen after being closed by Morocco in 2018. The agreement allows limited trade, with one truck per day in each direction, carrying specific goods like fresh produce from Morocco and hygiene products from Spain.
However, concerns remain, as Moroccan authorities will control what goods can cross, and no traveler purchases will be allowed.
Local businesses in Melilla have expressed frustration, fearing the deal benefits Morocco more than Spain.
Despite delays and technical hurdles, both nations aim to replace informal trade with regulated commerce.
