Spain Approves Major Tax Reform

Published: 2024-11-21

The Spanish government has successfully secured parliamentary approval for a significant fiscal reform, which includes a minimum corporate tax rate of 15% for multinational companies.

This move aligns with a European directive aimed at curbing aggressive tax planning by large corporations.

The reform package, passed after intense negotiations, also extends an extraordinary tax on banks and plans to introduce a new energy levy with incentives for green investments.

Additionally, the reform raises income tax rates for high earners and imposes new taxes on electronic cigarettes and tobacco products.

These measures are expected to generate substantial revenue, crucial for Spain to avoid European penalties and secure EU funds.

The government emphasizes that the reform promotes progressive taxation, ensuring that those with greater financial means contribute more to public finances.
