As Spain braces for the August holiday rush, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced a significant increase in alcohol and drug checks by the Guardia Civil.
This initiative coincides with the expected 8.3 million vehicle movements across the country, particularly affecting regions like Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Valencia, and Murcia.
The heightened vigilance aims to curb the alarming rates of substance use among drivers, with recent reports indicating that over half of traffic accident fatalities involved alcohol or drugs.
The DGT's campaign, running until August 25, emphasizes zero tolerance for impaired driving, urging drivers to opt for public transport or delay travel if necessary.
With festivities and vacations in full swing, the DGT also advises caution on the roads, highlighting the importance of seatbelt use and adherence to speed limits.
This comprehensive traffic operation seeks to ensure safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
