Spain Braces for Weather Shift: Heat to Storms

Published: 2024-08-12

Spain is bracing for a significant weather shift as a cold front approaches, promising a widespread drop in temperatures and increased instability.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts showers and thunderstorms across various regions, particularly in the north and northeast, with potential for hail in mountainous areas like the Cantabrian Mountains, the Iberian System, and the Pyrenees.

This change comes after a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in many parts of the country, prompting extreme heat warnings.

As the cold front moves in, temperatures are expected to fall notably, especially in the Cantabrian region, where they had previously reached dangerous levels.

Despite the cooling trend, high temperatures will persist in the eastern third of the peninsula, the central and southern Atlantic valleys, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands.

Looking ahead, there is a possibility of a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) forming in the Mediterranean later in the week, which could bring intense storms to the coastal areas of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, and the Region of Murcia.
