Spain Debates Shorter Work Week Amid Tense Negotiations

Published: 2024-07-05

The Spanish government, led by Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz, is pushing for a reduction in the workweek to 37.5 hours while maintaining current salaries.

This proposal has sparked intense negotiations between the government, labor unions, and business organizations.

The Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE) has strongly opposed the measure, calling it an interference in collective bargaining.

Díaz has accused the CEOE of mocking social dialogue, while the business group claims the government is engaging in a 'social monologue'.

Despite the tensions, the Labor Ministry has announced it will present a new proposal next week, aiming to reach an agreement.

However, they've set a clear boundary, rejecting any 'fake' reduction that would be offset by increasing overtime hours.
