Spain Faces Intense Heatwave and Storms

Published: 2024-08-20

Spain is bracing for a heatwave this week, with temperatures soaring up to 40ºC in several regions.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued warnings for five autonomous communities, particularly focusing on the southern plateau, Andalusia, and the Canary Islands.

In the Canary Islands, heavy showers and strong winds are expected, especially in mountainous areas where severe storms could occur.

The heat alerts affect areas including Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén, and Gran Canaria, with temperatures expected to exceed 36ºC in many southern regions.

Meanwhile, a potential weather shift is anticipated by Friday, as a trough from the Atlantic may bring cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, particularly affecting central and eastern Spain.

This change could alleviate the intense heat, with the possibility of significant rainfalls in areas like Aragón and Catalonia.
