Spain Faces Unusual September Weather Shift

Published: 2024-09-01

As September begins, Spain is experiencing a significant shift in weather conditions following a long, hot summer.

A DANA and an Atlantic trough have brought cooler temperatures and intense rainstorms to much of the country.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly in the northeastern regions of Aragón, Navarra, and northeastern Castilla-La Mancha.

These weather patterns are expected to spread to central Spain, the eastern third, and the Balearic Islands, with potential for strong storms in mountainous areas like the Iberian System and the Pyrenees.

Meanwhile, the northwest, including Galicia and the Cantabrian region, will also see increased rainfall due to an approaching Atlantic front.

In contrast, the Canary Islands will enjoy more stable weather with mostly clear skies.

Temperatures are generally dropping, especially in the northwest and Guadalquivir, while the Mediterranean coasts may still experience highs above 24-26 degrees.

This unusual weather pattern is likely to persist throughout September, marking an atypical start to the meteorological autumn.
