Spain Grapples with Migrant Crisis in Canary Islands

Published: 2024-07-11

The Canary Islands are facing a severe migrant crisis, with over 5,600 unaccompanied minors overwhelming the archipelago's capacity to care for them.

The Spanish government has proposed changes to the immigration law to allow for mandatory redistribution of these minors across other regions when the islands reach 150% of their capacity.

While most autonomous communities have agreed to voluntarily accept some minors, the proposed law change faces opposition from parties like Junts and ERC.

The situation has led to overcrowding in reception centers, with reports of inadequate conditions and lack of educational opportunities for the young migrants.

The crisis highlights the ongoing challenges Spain faces in managing migration flows and caring for unaccompanied minors.
