Spain on Red Alert for Arctic Storm

Published: 2024-12-09

Spain is bracing for a severe Arctic cold front that has put five regions on red alert due to heavy snow, strong winds, and rough seas.

The affected areas include Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León, Cataluña, and Navarra, where snow accumulations could reach up to 40 centimeters in 24 hours, especially in higher altitudes.

The cold front, which began over the weekend, is expected to bring temperatures down by 6 to 10 degrees across much of the country.

The storm has also triggered orange alerts for wind and coastal conditions in regions like the Balearic Islands and Cantabria.

As the cold air mass spreads, snowfall is likely to extend to other mountainous areas in northern Spain, with the Cantabrian Mountains and the Pyrenees experiencing the heaviest snowfalls.

The weather is expected to ease by Tuesday, although temperatures will remain low, with frost likely in many inland areas.
