Spain Raises Minimum Wage Amid Tax Debate

Spain's government has approved a 4.4% increase in the minimum wage, raising it to €1,184 per month.

This move benefits 2.4 million workers, with women and young employees being the most impacted.

However, the decision has sparked controversy as some low-income earners will now face income tax deductions for the first time.

Around 20% of minimum wage earners, mainly single individuals without children, will be affected.

The Ministry of Finance argues that these workers will still pay less tax than under previous systems.

Critics, including Vice President Yolanda Díaz, have called for greater tax fairness, highlighting disparities between individual taxpayers and large corporations.

The debate underscores broader tensions over economic policy within the government.
