Spain's ALS Law: A Historic Step

Published: 2024-09-18

Spain is on the brink of passing a groundbreaking law aimed at improving the lives of those suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other severe neurological conditions.

The proposed legislation, backed by major political parties including PP, PSOE, Sumar, and Junts, promises comprehensive care, including 24-hour home support and expedited disability assessments.

However, patient associations warn that without proper funding, estimated at 200 million euros annually, the law could become ineffective.

Despite the historic agreement, concerns remain about the law's implementation and the need for a national patient registry to accurately assess costs.

Advocates stress the urgency of funding and action, emphasizing that ALS patients cannot afford further delays.
