Spain's "Gag Law" Faces Major Reforms

Published: 2024-10-03

The Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has reached a significant agreement with EH Bildu to reform the controversial Citizen Security Law, often referred to as the "gag law.

" This law, originally enacted in 2015, has faced widespread criticism for its harsh measures, including the use of rubber bullets by security forces.

The new agreement proposes replacing rubber bullets with less harmful alternatives, addressing concerns about their potential to cause serious injuries.

Additionally, the reform aims to modify the handling of migrant expulsions at borders, ensuring compliance with international human rights standards.

The agreement also seeks to reduce penalties for disrespecting authorities, shifting some offenses from severe to minor infractions.

However, the deal has sparked opposition from police unions, who argue it undermines their operational capabilities.

The government must still secure broader political support to implement these changes.
