Spanish Church and Government Clash Over Abuse Victim Compensation

Published: 2024-07-07

The Spanish Catholic Church is set to approve a plan to compensate victims of clerical sexual abuse, but the government is pushing back.

The Church's plan, to be voted on Tuesday, includes economic support and psychological assistance for victims in cases that have expired or where the abuser has died.

However, the government, led by Minister Félix Bolaños, insists on state supervision of any compensation scheme.

Bolaños has written to the bishops, warning that unilateral action without state oversight will not be accepted.

The government is also meeting with victim associations, potentially to challenge the Church's plan.

This clash highlights the ongoing tension between the Church and state in addressing historical abuse cases.
