Spain's Constitutional Court has overturned several convictions in the high-profile ERE corruption case, including those of former Andalusian presidents Manuel Chaves and José Antonio Griñán.
The court ruled that the preparation of budget bills cannot constitute a crime of prevarication, effectively dismantling much of the case.
This decision has led to the release of several officials who were serving prison sentences.
The ruling, backed by seven progressive judges against four conservatives, has sparked controversy and criticism from opposition parties.
The court ordered new, likely reduced sentences for some defendants, considering only specific budget modifications as potentially criminal.
