Thousands March Against Mass Tourism in Barcelona

Published: 2024-07-06

On Saturday, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Barcelona to voice their concerns about mass tourism.

The demonstration, organized by over 140 entities, drew around 2,800 people according to official figures.

Marchers carried banners with slogans like 'Tourist go home' and 'Barcelona is not Disneyland', expressing frustration over rising living costs, housing issues, and environmental concerns attributed to excessive tourism.

The protest route included popular tourist spots like Las Ramblas and ended in Barceloneta.

Organizers called for measures to reduce tourist activities, including limiting cruise ships and closing tourist accommodations.

Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, responded by highlighting recent initiatives to address tourism impacts, such as increasing tourist taxes and plans to eliminate 10,000 tourist apartments.
