Trapero Returns as Catalonia's Police Chief

Published: 2024-08-26

Josep Lluís Trapero has been appointed as the new Director General of the Catalan Police, marking his return to a prominent leadership role.

This decision comes after the failed operation to detain former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, which led to the dismissal of Eduard Sallent as the head of the Mossos d'Esquadra.

Trapero, who previously held the position twice, is known for his handling of the 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils attacks and the controversial Catalan independence referendum.

His appointment by the new Catalan President, Salvador Illa, fulfills a campaign promise and aims to restore stability and confidence in the police force.

The new leadership team, including Miquel Esquius as the new police chief, is expected to focus on reducing crime rates and improving public safety perceptions.

This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to distance the police from political influences and enhance operational effectiveness.
