Venezuela and Spain in Diplomatic Standoff

Published: 2024-09-13

Diplomatic tensions between Venezuela and Spain have intensified following remarks by Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, who labeled the Venezuelan government as a "dictatorship.

" In response, Venezuela's Foreign Minister Yván Gil summoned the Spanish ambassador in Caracas and recalled its ambassador from Madrid.

The situation escalated after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met with Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, who recently sought asylum in Spain.

The Venezuelan government criticized Robles' comments as "insolent" and indicative of deteriorating relations.

Despite the tensions, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has maintained a calm stance, emphasizing the importance of strong ties with Venezuela.
