Venezuela Threatens Diplomatic Break with Spain

Published: 2024-09-12

Venezuela's National Assembly President, Jorge Rodríguez, has called for an immediate severance of diplomatic, commercial, and consular ties with Spain.

This move follows the Spanish Congress's recognition of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela's president-elect.

Rodríguez, echoing President Nicolás Maduro's sentiments, described the Spanish decision as a "declaration of war" against Venezuela.

The proposed resolution, expected to pass swiftly, includes halting commercial flights between Madrid and Caracas.

This diplomatic tension marks a significant escalation in Venezuela-Spain relations, reminiscent of past conflicts.

The Venezuelan government aims to prevent similar international recognitions of González Urrutia, who has been acknowledged by several countries, including the United States and Canada.
