West Nile Virus Outbreak in Andalusia

Published: 2024-08-15

The West Nile Virus outbreak in Andalusia has intensified, with the recent death of an 87-year-old woman in Coria del Río, Sevilla.

The Andalusian Health Department has confirmed 10 new cases in the province, with infections reported in Dos Hermanas, Coria del Río, La Puebla del Río, Sevilla, and Utrera.

The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, has also been detected in horses in Jerez de la Frontera and other locations.

Local residents, fearing the mosquito-borne disease, have organized a protest in Coria del Río.

Health authorities are coordinating with local governments to control mosquito populations and reduce transmission risks.

The public is urged to take preventive measures, such as using repellents and avoiding mosquito-prone areas during peak activity times.
