The Barcelona Zoo is mourning the loss of Yoyo, the world's oldest recorded African elephant, who passed away at the age of 54. Yoyo, who far exceeded the average lifespan of 39 years for elephants in captivity, had been a beloved resident of the zoo since 2009. She was known for her gentle yet strong character and served as a caretaker figure for her companions, Susi and Bully.
Her health had been deteriorating in recent weeks due to age-related issues, despite the dedicated efforts of the zoo's veterinary team.
Yoyo's passing has left a void in the lives of her fellow elephants, who are now receiving special care.
The zoo, which closed temporarily to honor her memory, will share findings from her autopsy with international conservation programs to aid in the preservation of the species.
