Carnival Crowd Rejects Conspiracy Act

The Carnival of Cádiz witnessed an unprecedented uproar during the preliminary rounds of its 2025 competition.

The chirigota "Abre los ojos," known for its controversial negationist stance on climate change and vaccines, faced fierce backlash from the audience at the Gran Teatro Falla.

From the start, the group was met with boos, chants, and demands to "lower the curtain," as their performance was deemed subpar both musically and theatrically.

Led by Catalina Balber, a figure linked to far-right ideologies, the group attempted to deliver messages filled with conspiracy theories, but the audience drowned them out with traditional Carnival songs and jeers.

Despite completing their act, the performance ended in disarray, with one guitarist leaving mid-show and a young member in tears.

Balber later accused the audience and media of censorship, but many saw the crowd's reaction as a defense of the Carnival's spirit of freedom and quality.
