Controversial Reform Sparks Political Clash

Published: 2024-10-08

The Spanish Senate is embroiled in controversy over a reform that could reduce sentences for ETA prisoners.

The Popular Party (PP), initially supporting the reform, now seeks to delay its approval, citing an "unjustifiable error.

" This move has intensified their confrontation with the government, which insists on passing the reform unchanged, despite accusations of "indignity" from the PP.

The reform, part of a European directive, allows prisoners to count time served in France, potentially benefiting 44 ETA members.

Victims' associations have expressed outrage, calling it a "shameful step.

" The government, however, remains firm, arguing the reform's necessity and legality, while the PP urges a reconsideration before the October 14 deadline.
