Spain's Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, is under scrutiny after deleting data from his mobile phone twice on October 16, the same day the Supreme Court opened an investigation into his alleged role in a leaked email scandal.
The email, linked to the partner of Madrid's regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, was reportedly sent to the prosecution in February 2024. A Civil Guard report confirmed García Ortiz did not communicate with journalists or outsiders on the night of the leak but highlighted extensive internal calls within the prosecution.
His deletion of WhatsApp messages and a private Gmail account has drawn criticism, including from government ministers, who question his defense strategy.
While no evidence of external leaks has been found, the controversy raises questions about transparency and accountability in high office.
